What alternate reality did I walk into in this thread?
I can't decide if I want to giggle, spit in disgust, or vomit. Maybe all three. At the same time. And I thought I was crazy.
so for our "congregation book study", we are still deeply mired in the bible teach book.
this week's lesson talks about the whole idea that the book of job relates the central issue of the entire cosmos, a vital issue raised by satan, where satan questions whether humans follow god because of what they are given, or because he deserves it.
i'm surprised that the book of job, obviously archetypal and figurative (for example, i doubt people back then literally spoke for hours in hebrew verse, and i doubt that four messengers showed up all in a row with stories telling that they, only they, got away to tell of a disaster) even has a place in the canon; aside from its lack of any specific historical position or accuracy, the argument it advances (especially as the society interprets it) is facile: the idea that privileged, wealthy, powerful job somehow stands as a representative for all humanity and serves as a litmus test for man's interaction with god is downright silly.

Forgot to answer the question.
I get a rush out of "Mother" by Danzig. It goes...
Mother...tell your children not to walk my way
Tell your children not to hear my words, what they mean, what they say
Mother...
Mother...can you keep 'em in the dark awhile?
Can you hide 'em from the waiting world?
Oh, mother...
ect.
Not about to see your light
So if you wanna bang heads with me
I can show you what it's like
'Til your bleedin'
Cool song I think. Most of the song is a big FU to the world in general. Seems to fit my mood a lot lately.

Sorry, but I can't resist an opportunity to say JOSH GROBAN. Maybe not everyone's type of music, but in my opinion THE most talented male vocalist of our time. |
There you go talking about your boyfriend again. I can't win can I wifey?
have joined in the past month or two?.
i can't keep up there seems to be so many so i wanted to start a welcome thread for new newbies.. sorry if this was already done recently.. note: the in-built search system is currently being redeveloped so i am not able to check for this topic without looking through tons of pages.. anyway...say hello!.
plm.
(raises hand)
i'll be honest; i'm mostly a curiosity seeker, though i do have some jw history.
my grandmother (my dad's mom) who just recently passed away at the age of 86 was a jehovah's witness; at her funeral i heard the jw story line about resurrection and eternal life on earth.
i was not unfamiliar with it.
twilly said: were they just trying to sugar coat their belief system to make it more palatable to potential converts
That is it exactly. I just made a post about this on another thread, but if you want to know about the precise way that someone new to the religion is converted, then go here...
http://members.aol.com/Beyondjw/indoct.htm
It is a long but very worth while read. It explains a lot; to those who have or are leaving the organization, and to those who are just looking into the religion.
hello all who may read this, i am in the midst of writing a story, and a character who has appeared in the story is a jehovah's witness... i am attempting to gain a better understanding of the religion and its practitioners so as to present witnesses in a fair light... i am of no religious affiliation, but i assume that anything that a person believes is valid as long as they have put it through much consideration and thoughtfulness...
) of you are ex-witnesses, but i would like to know about what first attracted you to the religion to begin with... was it just passed down in your family, or did you make a conscious choice to become a witness?
if so, for what reasons?
Hello, pcecilia
Please understand that when I write this, I am not bitter or angry or (fill in the blank) at the organization which I was a part of for many, many years and recently left.
I am just sad. Not bitter, just sad. Sad that so many things in my life can never be undone. Sad that I missed out on so much because of so many wasted years and because of so much mental pain. But enough about me. If you want to know my story you can read my profile. I want you to know that stuff because I don't want you to think I'm trying to "stick it" to the organization by posting what I'm about to write.
Now then...
You refered to brain washing in your first post. Make no mistake, if a person wasn't raised a witness, then that is exactly what is going on to get them to join as an adult.
It was sugggested you go to a kingdom hall and let the witnesses there tell you all about it. I hope you realize that was in jest (at least I sure hope it was ). You can speak to as many witnesses at a kingdom hall as you want to, but THEY WILL NOT TELL YOU THE TRUTH about what goes on. They aren't allowed to fill you in on how the whole thing works for real. Even if they wanted to or if they actually can bring themselves to admit what goes on, there is too much fear of the organization; too much fear of getting in trouble. The organization has far too strong of a strangle hold on people's minds and lives to let them speak freely.
If you really do want to know how the process works of brining someone new into the organization, then follow the link below. What you will read there is not exagerated. It is not made up. I can personally tell you that it happened exactly that way for both my wife and myself.

If that link doesn't work or if you want to get to the main page of that site then go to http://members.aol.com/Beyondjw/ or google "beyond jehovah's witnesses"
Good luck with your book.
Peace to everybody

a man that works at the corner has been especially nice to the kids and i over the last years.
he had to go back to pakistan recently for 6 months.
he did get married during this time.
errr, ummm, sorry..
Looks like I caused some trouble.
Sorry 'bout that.
Thanks for the welcome sparkplug.
btw, that you used up your post limit per day in my wife's thread (exwitless - "hello we're new here" was the thread I think) to welcome us really meant a lot to us. You're pretty cool.
Hello Simon, you have a nice board here, I apreciate your support. Sorry for the trouble and that we had to meet this way.
LDH don't know why what I wrote was ego-centric. Not even sure what that means. Seriously. Honestly when I replied to what you wrote, I really hadn't paid all that much attention to the original, post (my bad). The are soooo many topics rolling by all the time that it is difficult to focus on them. I have never been on any board this active. I was just scanning the active topics, and happened to see this thread, scanned through it really quickly, and saw your line that I commented on. It just jumped out to me as the typical "trailer trash" stereotype and that got under my skin. While I won't appologize to you for something you wrote (the trailer stereotype), I will appologize to you for not expressing myself properly and will fully admit that I didn't read the thread better. So, I'm sorrry. Hope we can be friends.
Peace everybody,
LittleDrummerBoy
tomorrow, my husband and i will be attending joy castro's book signing.
sunday, our 8 year old son gets to attend a birthday party for the first time (his cousin's).
i'm so glad we got out before our son got much older.
No, but we have noticed that I seem to have a small outgrowth above my rear. Probably the start of the long barbed tail. Also, picked up some implements at Pitch-Forks-R-Us today.

Why, yes, but you should explain to him that not all "Americans" live in mobile homes at or near poverty level, either. These are the Americans he speaks of that believe that black people shoot up 'everything.'
Ummmm?...whaaaat?
I really, really, REALLY hope I am misunderstanding you here. If I read correctly you are saying that if a person has a mobile home and is poor that they are rascist.
If so then i reitterate....whaaaat?
What color is the sky in the world you live in? Is it purple with pink polka-dots?
btw some people choose to live in mobile homes to save money. (like me for instance)
Does that make me....and I shudder to stoop so low as to type this because I hate the term, but does that make me trailer trash? Just because of what I live in? Just because I am not well off financially?
sheesh
If I misunderstood, then I respectfully ask that you enlighten me.
If you were just joking....it wasn't funny.
